We all know that time is precious and we shouldn’t waste it… But messages such as the one in this video, telling us that we are wasting the major part of our lives if we are not doing what we love or following our passion, makes those who work at a “regular job” feel pretty horrible.
“Do what you love!”
“Find your passion!”
Yes, I do subscribe to the possibility of finding another way, a way more in alignment with what you love and who you are (I am living proof). It does not happen overnight, but it is absolutely doable to change careers, get out of the rat race or change paths in any area of life.
However, it is also perfectly fine to be working at a job you don’t love (bonus if you don’t hate it), because you can choose to bring the love and the passion to the work you do!
Instead of looking to your work to fill you up, fill IT up with the best of you. Fill up the people around you with love and passion…And that love and passion will spread and make the workplace more enjoyable and satisfying.
Funny thing is that with time, living this way will draw you automatically and easily to a different path if there is one better suited for what you are here to do.
In the end, it’s not about WHAT you do but HOW you do it and WHO you are when you’re doing it.
There are janitors, gas-station attendants (such as Socrates in Dan Millman‘s “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior”) and administrative assistants who are peaceful, content and do everything they do with an open heart.
Try it; smile at a colleague who drives you nuts. Bring someone coffee. Drive to work feeling grateful for your car. Listen to music you love while you work. Whistle. And find time outside of the 9-5 for activities and hobbies you love and are passionate about.
As Tony Robbins says, “Live with passion!” It’s the only way to avoid the dreaded 40-year “waste of time”.
